Another good day...for human rights over false security

This week President Obama signed an executive order to close Guantanamo Bay detention center. In addition, the order formally:

1. Bans torture and inhumane and degrading treatment of detainees by requiring that the Army field manual be used as the guide for terror interrogations.

2. Closes the CIA’s secret prisons and ends the Bush administration's CIA program of enhanced interrogation methods that have included abhorrent procedures like water-boarding.

3. Provides the International Committee of the Red Cross access to all U.S.-held detainees.

4. Establishes an interagency task force to lead a systematic review of detention policies and procedures and a review of all individual cases.

(Thanks to Ruth for the summary.)

Perhaps now we'll see the Harper government here in Canada finally act to bring Canadian citizen Omar Khadr home. He was illegally incarcerated in Guantanamo Bay at 15 years old and has given his youth to imprisonment, torture and deprivation. It will be so interesting to have an US administration with more liberal principles, political transparency, and a stronger human rights agenda than Canada. Let's turf Harper as soon as we can, fellow Canucks...

For information on Khadr, check here.

Comments:
He's only been in office for a few days, and I feel like he's really doing a lot already. I have a sense of hope about America that I haven't felt in a long time.

I'll be glad to go along with that sentiment. Hopefully, Harper will be gone long before I return to help vote him out.

We were notified about a very interesting looking magazine subscription today.. something about a Walrus :-)

As for turfing Harper as soon as we can - this Tuesday? (The budget..)

One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.

PS - Saw some proud Canadians at the inauguration. Thought of all my Canadian friends! =)

Hi Gary

This is indeed very good news and hopefully heralds in a new era to end the ideological fervor that presided over that immediate past period of assaults and alienation of human rights.

Thanks to Amnesty for their tireless work to bring to light the full extent of the horror and alienation of human rights orchestrated under the guise of the phony war on terror.

Hopefully we will now see a return to the rule of law and justice.

Given this beginning I think we can remain optimistic that relations with the USA to the rest of the world will improve along with a more considered stance in contrast to prior idea that good and evil idea can be applied to nations as a simple matter of picking out a few bad apples from the box of good fruit.

Alliances have a nasty habit of requiring those involved to support measures later that on balance they would not otherwise engage in, but I don’t want to harp on the matter.

Best wishes

the united states has survived and prospered without using torture in the past, to the betterment of all humankind. taking the high moral ground is always the correct choice.

It's a courageous start by Obama. It will become clear in the future how things really work out.

aww. you got spammed by some costa rican site. i was reading that a lot of americans buy real estate in costa rica, then squatters move onto the land and the courts often (usually?) side with the squatters. buyer beware.
