Shine a light in the dark friends...and enjoy being together

What a time we are living in, eh? While it's easy to be upset and concerned (impossible not to be), I also can count my privileges...I am relatively affluent, quite safe, a white man, healthy and live in a stable social democracy.  All that to say, I am sad and angry and worried, but realize how many others are suffering or at risk more than I am. Trumpism is unleashing much that disturbs and much that is already harming people.

Here's something I love:

Hope
by Vaclav Havel

Hope is a state of mind, not a state of the world
Either we have hope within us or we don’t.
Hope is not a prognostication—it’s an orientation of the spirit.
You can’t delegate that to anyone else.

Hope in this deep and powerful sense is not the same as joy
when things are going well,
or the willingness to invest in enterprises
that are obviously headed for early success,
but rather an ability to work for something to succeed.

Hope is definitely NOT the same as optimism.
It’s not the conviction that something will turn out well,
but the certainty that something makes sense,
regardless of how it turns out.

It is hope, above all, that gives us strength to live
and to continually try new things,
even in conditions that seem as hopeless as ours do, here and now.
In the face of this absurdity, life is too precious a thing
to permit its devaluation by living pointlessly, emptily,
without meaning, without love, and, finally, without hope.

Hi Gary,
Might I suggest a positive side to Trumpism (a gospel politicians preach to instill fear in locals: illegals are bringing crime and robbing their jobs, and radicals among Muslim refugees are terrorizing the "infidels.") for Australia and Canada. How about ramping up offers to migrate to Australia and Canada? There is even the prospect of getting an increasingly alarmed and growing disgruntled top brass at Silicon Valley, in banking services and elsewhere to relocate.
How do you usher in new laws when you don’t have much of an idea of existing ones, or bother to understand how local industries depend heavily on imports from other countries?
But a nice poem, for we do all indeed saviour a hope!!
Can we hold out a hope twitter can invent a robot to understands the laws and issues “warning tweets” when proposed measures violate oaths taken when taking office to uphold the constitution. Are we making it just too hard for such smart people with such a wonderful talent to twitter to make good deals in their twittering best interest? Keep the light shining !!
Best wishes

Lindsay...Canada is already receiving regugees and immigrants who are coming from the US or from abroad because of both the illegal ban and from fear of the new administration. We also have accepted more than 40,000 Syrian refugees in the past 18 months, some to Nelson here. Our gain all around.

I like the Twitter robot idea, although I sometimes wish Twitter would just go away and certain leaders would have to speak full paragraphs and answer questions in public. Best to you too!

politics and big business.... will do anything to make money
I don't see a truthfully honest one amongst any of them anywhere
