Good enough is Good Enough

We seem to be a society that is obsessed with extremes... somehow it's not good enough unless it's great. Work has to be excellent or best practice (wonder who started with ordinary practice?). Bodies have to be attractive (and slim). And of course, we have to be the best we can be! It's not enough to play games, it's important to be on winning teams. Superpower, super-model, superstar, new & improved, super laxatives and Olympic medals...

I am considering writing a book with the working title: Abandoning Excellence - Good Enough is Good Enough. It will promote relaxing, slowing down, enjoying each other the way we are, striving for good enough in raising kids, getting jobs, getting fit, eating and on and on.

If this resonates with you, I'd love to hear your ideas for content.

If it doesn't resonate - feel free to climb back on the treadmill, find your perfect lover, be passionate in all you do... and you're very beautiful - really.

What's with religion anyhow?

I really don't want to be inundated with religious messages (which are often a bit hateful and always presumptuous ) - but what is this religion thing? If I were the only person who claimed to see the world entirely through a viewpoint based on believing in somone born from a virgin, who died and came to life again and if I believe in stories of him I'll go to heaven after I die... I'd be sent for counselling or good medication. If a lot of people believe that - well, that's just fine.

Or perhaps I believe that if I die while converting or killing non-believers in my faith... well, I'll immediately go to a lovely garden and be surrounded by loving virgins. Nice.

Okay... I do honestly respect everyone's right to believe what he or she chooses to. That doesn't mean I need to respect or give validity to the belief itself. And for God's sake (if He or She is listening)... please help everyone get over needing to see a particular belief as the 'only way'. What a burden for all of us. Really.

That's my rant for tonight.

Looking forward...looking back

I'm new to blogging and look forward to learning what I want to communicate and discovering if anyone at all is interested in it. That's the looking forward part.

Next week I'm flying east in Canada and spending a week visiting childhood homes - none of which I've returned to before. I plan to walk the areas and see what kind of memories are stirred. No doubt many things will have changed (including me), yet I have a craving to connect to the young me. I'm also attending a high school reunion - yikes!

Maybe I'll blog a bit on the trip and bring the past and future together...

Sucurity and human rights

Weird times. While we scurry as societies to protect ourselves from mysterious terrorists (some who do exist), we seem willing to give up or trample on basic human rights. It might be the prisoners in Gitmo (Guantanamo Bay) who exist in a lawless limbo... some are children and have been there 3 years. It might be a Canadian citizen secreted off to Syria to be tortured with at least some Canadian government complicity. And all this frees regimes in Egypt, Uzbhekistan and elsewhere to go at their citizens...all in the name of security.

Here's to showing the world what power looks like with integrity and respect for humanity...I'm for it.
